Junya Watanabe

Junya Watanabe began his career as an apprentice patternmaker for Comme des Garçons, where his talents caught the eye of Rei Kawakubo. As her protegé, Watanabe (who shares his alma mater, Tokyo's Bunka Fashion College, with Yohji Yamamoto and Kenzo Takada) oversaw the design of Tricot knitwear and Homme Plus before opening his own label under the Comme umbrella in 1993. Experimental fabrications, thematic collections, and imaginative collaborations with major brands like Converse, The North Face, and Carhartt WIP unify Watanabe's consistently surprising body of work.
