Basque design genius Cristobal Balenciaga founded his eponymous house in 1919. Hallowed for the sculptural modernity and technological innovation of his creations, Balenciaga is widely known as the greatest couturier of our time. After a dormancy following the passing of the designer in the late 1960s, the house revived in 1986 and has enjoyed a renaissance under designers Nicolas Ghesquiere ('97-'15), Alexander Wang ('12-'15), and, currently, Demna Gvasalia of Vetements, who has boldly positioned the brand at the precise crux of streetwear and couture with signature humor and subversion.
