"The Tabi boot is the most important footprint of my career: it’s recognizable, it still goes on after 25 years, and it has never been copied.” - Martin Margiela
Margiela’s first runway show in Spring 1989 opened with a pair of wide leg trousers and Tabis (no top). She and those after her stepped in red paint before the cloth-covered runway — cloven footprints. The runway became a waistcoat the following season.
The Tabi Boot in white is now sold exclusively by Totokaelo and Maison Margiela. Its introduction is accompanied by an installation of short films and hand-painted Tabis by New York-based performance and video artist (and key Margiela model) Sarah Abney, on view at 54 Crosby.
